London is a collection of villages. At one time they were far from the city, each independent with a small but important life of its own. Now they have been gobbled up and their personalities are nearly extinguished by modern life. At first sight there seems to be a certain similarity in vast areas of London. Nevertheless, to those who know and love it, London is full of reminders of lovely old villages and the famous men and women who lived in them.
