This book was originally published to meet the needs of OU students studying the nineteenth century novel but would be of interest to anyone who is a serious reader of fiction from Jane Austen to Thomas Hardy. Much of the material in the book is not easily found elsewhere. Part 1 of the book consists of pieces dealing with the general problems of novel-reading. Part 2 which is the larger part of the anthology, contains varied critical studies of individual works and in addition includes a number of documents of fundamental importance in the development of the novel.
