The winds did not blow fair when they drove the crippled schooner Nonpariel on to the coast of Houat, a rocky island off the Bretton Coast. Houat was to prove to be Lieutenant Robert Ring’s lee shore – ‘when a man’s in trouble with small hope of getting out of it, he’s on a lee shore.
