‘ Scholarship at Stake’ contains two of Jane Hope’s front-line dispatches from the classroom, ‘The Scholarship Stakes’ and ‘Standing room Only’. In the first she conjures up the perils of higher education as she dissects the Scholarship Entrance Examination with satiric wit and sardonic humour which she only matched by her devastating drawings. In the second, down at a lower level of learning, she is wickedly funny on the nutty problem of unwieldy classes in cramped spaces. This would be an useful book for anyone studying or interested in the history of education.
