Gillcarr is the story of an ancient house standing high above the once-turbulent Calder as it flows through what is still one of the loveliest valleys in the industrial West Riding. To it, early in the century comes Helga Morton, an orphan, young, inexperienced, & ignorant of it’s history & of the sordid connections that have made its unsavoury reputation; her only aim is that of familiarising herself with the countryside surrounding her mother’s childhood home, ‘Woodleas’. An unusual love story develops about which, like sheet lightening flickering through summer clouds, play the contending forces of good & evil, innocence & guilt.
