The acquisition by the Metropolitan Museum of Art of twenty five important Sung and Yuan paintings, dated between about 1050 and 1380, from the collection of Mr.Chi-ch’ien Wang fills a major gap in the Far Eastern collections of the Museum. Mr. Wang’s collection came to New York with him in the late 1940s. It was one of the most important private collections of early Chinese paintings that had been gathered since the seventeenth century, the last periods when great private collections flourished in China.
