David Beaty (1919-1999) fought as a Royal Air Force pilot in the Second World War, and was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his exceptional bravery under fire. After the war he became a noted aviation psychologist and is credited with greatly reducing the incidence of accidents caused by pilot error. In tandem with this he became a well-known author of novels with an aviation theme.
